Key Insights
- - The most engaging cannabis virtual events create active participation rather than passive viewing by incorporating interactive elements including live Q&A, polls, product demonstrations, virtual tastings, guest expert panels, and community challenges that make attendance more valuable than simply watching a recording afterward.
- - Cannabis virtual events are one of the few brand-building channels where the advertising restrictions that limit paid cannabis marketing do not apply, because virtual events are brand-hosted content experiences rather than paid advertising placements, giving cannabis brands creative latitude to tell their story, showcase their products, and build consumer relationships in ways that paid advertising platforms restrict.
- - Partnering with complementary brands, industry influencers, or community figures for cannabis virtual events expands the audience reach beyond the brand's existing following by activating the partner's audience, creating cross-promotional content opportunities, and adding credibility to the event through the expertise and reputation of featured guests.
- - Recording and repurposing cannabis virtual event content across social media, YouTube, email, blog posts, and website pages generates ongoing marketing value from the original event investment, because high-quality virtual event content can be edited into shorter clips, quote graphics, written summaries, and on-demand video assets that continue reaching new audiences long after the live event.
- - Building a cannabis virtual event community with consistent recurring programming, including monthly or quarterly events with reliable formats and rotating topics, creates the audience relationship continuity that makes individual virtual events into ongoing brand touchpoints rather than one-off marketing activations.
Expert Answers
[{What types of virtual events work best for cannabis brands?}
Cannabis virtual events that work best for brand building include educational webinars that share genuine expertise on cannabis topics relevant to the brand audience; product launch events that introduce new cannabis products with demonstrations, behind-the-scenes content, and expert commentary; virtual panel discussions featuring industry experts, brand founders, or community figures who bring credibility and unique perspective to topics relevant to the cannabis consumer audience; cooking and pairing demonstrations that show cannabis consumers how to incorporate cannabis products into lifestyle occasions in entertaining and practical ways; virtual farm or facility tours that connect consumers to the cultivation and production story behind the brand; and community Q&A sessions where brand founders or experts engage directly with consumer questions in a format that builds authentic brand relationships.
{How do cannabis brands attract audiences to virtual events?}
Cannabis brands attract virtual event audiences through a combination of owned channel promotion including email and SMS marketing to existing customers and followers, social media content marketing that builds awareness and anticipation for the upcoming event, partnerships with complementary brands and industry figures whose audiences overlap with the cannabis brand target, cannabis-relevant online communities and forums where virtual event announcements can reach engaged cannabis audiences organically, and cannabis media and publication outreach for events with sufficient news value to attract editorial coverage. The most effective cannabis virtual event promotion combines the breadth of social media and email reach with the credibility amplification of partner and media relationships that expand the audience beyond the brand's direct following.
{How should cannabis brands measure virtual event success?}
Cannabis brands should measure virtual event success through metrics that capture both the immediate event performance and the longer-term marketing value generated. Attendance metrics including registration volume, show-up rate, and average attendance duration measure the event's immediate reach and engagement quality. Engagement metrics including Q&A participation rate, poll response rate, and social sharing volume during the event measure how actively the audience engaged with the content. Post-event content performance metrics including recording views, social clip engagement, and email summary click rates measure how much ongoing value the content generates after the live event. Brand metrics including follower growth in the days following the event, new email list subscribers, and website traffic increases measure the broader brand awareness impact. For events with commercial objectives, registration-to-purchase conversion rates and promo code redemptions measure the direct revenue contribution.
{What technology does a cannabis brand need to run virtual events?}
Cannabis brands need a video conferencing or webinar platform that supports the size and format of the virtual event, with common options including Zoom Webinars for structured presentations with large audiences, Zoom Meetings for smaller interactive sessions, Hopin or Airmeet for more complex multi-session virtual event formats, StreamYard for live streaming to social platforms, and Riverside.fm for high-quality virtual event recording optimized for post-event content repurposing. Beyond the hosting platform, cannabis brands need reliable video and audio production quality including a good webcam or camera, microphone, and lighting for presenters; a registration and event management system for audience tracking and follow-up communications; and a social media management tool for real-time social engagement during live events.]

Frequently Asked Questions
[ {How often should cannabis brands host virtual events?}
The optimal virtual event frequency for cannabis brands depends on the brand's content production capacity, audience size and engagement level, and the strategic role virtual events play in the overall marketing program. Cannabis brands with dedicated content teams and established audiences typically benefit from monthly virtual events that create consistent brand touchpoints and build the audience relationship continuity that makes each event incrementally easier to fill. Smaller cannabis brands with limited production capacity may find that quarterly virtual events allow sufficient time for meaningful event production, promotion, and content repurposing without overextending resources. The most important principle is consistency over frequency, because audiences build attendance habits around reliable recurring events more effectively than around high-frequency events with inconsistent scheduling.
{Can cannabis dispensaries run virtual events to attract local customers?}
Cannabis dispensaries can run virtual events to attract local customers, and the local geographic concentration of the dispensary audience actually makes virtual event promotion more achievable than for national cannabis brands because the target audience is geographically defined and reachable through local digital advertising and community channels. Dispensary virtual events most effective for local customer engagement include new product launch events that give local cannabis consumers early access to information about new arrivals, educational events with local budtenders and brand representatives that build the personal relationships that drive in-store recommendation, community events with local partners including wellness practitioners, artists, or lifestyle brands whose audiences overlap with the dispensary target consumer, and loyalty member exclusive events that reward the dispensary best customers with special access and experiences.
{What are the biggest mistakes cannabis brands make with virtual events?}
The most common mistakes cannabis brands make with virtual events include producing events with passive presentation formats that fail to create the audience engagement that makes live attendance more valuable than watching a recording; underinvesting in event promotion and relying on organic reach alone, which consistently produces lower registration and attendance than a multi-channel promotion approach; failing to repurpose event content after the live broadcast, leaving significant marketing value unrealized from the original production investment; running one-off events without a programming strategy that builds audience loyalty through consistent recurring formats; and measuring virtual event success through registration counts alone without tracking the engagement quality, post-event content performance, and brand metrics that indicate whether the event investment is generating meaningful brand building value. ]

{Trusted By}
and solely in the cannabis space so we're really really happy to be partnering with all of our dispensary partners out there let's get ready for today's webinar we're going to be moving fairly quickly with a lot of tips and tricks for your 420 holiday and events so let's take a moment to just silence those cell phones we love them they're really a pivotal part of digital advertising but for the webinar just since we're going to be covering so much put them face down on your desk for just 30 minutes promise you you're going to get a lot of value out of this if you're joining us on the zoom interface do you take a moment to just familiarize yourself with the zoom interface there is a q a button at the bottom we do have panelists live here to answer any questions you have and or comments and then be sure to stick around we do always like to offer special offers for those attending um as well as any questions that you may be having throughout the webinar as well as the end of the webinar we'll be sharing some uh really nice giveaways which keeps in in line with some of the recommendations we're gonna be making here let's get right into it so the 420 holiday typically generates three to four times a dispensary's daily
{Time to Celebrate}
revenue it's basically the black friday of the cannabis industry not having a plan in place is essentially letting money slip through your fingers in addition to generating record sales 420 also offers dispensaries the unique opportunity to expand brand reach engage with current customers and build relationships with new customers there are new customers who are finally of age and ready to celebrate with us plus because cannabis has become even more popular during the pandemic you may find that there are more can of curious people stopping by to try cannabis for the first time 420 is the perfect time to engage with these customers and showcase what your dispensary is all about when you create a memorable experience you can turn a regular customer into a loyal customer that will come back time and again but there's an elephant in the room right covet is still a concern and different states have varying levels of health measures in place plus those measures can change between now and 4 20. so how can you put together a memorable event that you won't have to cancel starters you can go virtual and if you do choose to hold a event in person you can make sure you're following safety best practices like mask wearing and social distancing to protect your staff and your customers
{Consider Your Audience}
when researching different 420 events our team came across a variety of fun things to do now some of them may not be right for you and that's totally fine when picking what type of virtual or in-person event to do this year you need to keep a few things in mind first your target audience who are you hoping to attract and what are they into so if you're an adult use dispensary in a college town 420 is going to be looking a little different than if you're a medical dispensary in a suburban area as we cover some of the different creative 420 campaigns think about whether they are appropriate for your audience if they aren't how can you make it work what spin can you put on it that will truly make it your own and get your customers rushing to sign up next think about whether you want to go virtual or do your events in person if you are opting for virtual make sure to stick around because i am going to talk about some of the things you need to make your virtual event a success in just a little bit if you are opting for an in-person event then you need to make sure you have enough space to allow people to physically distance themselves you also need to take into account any gathering regulations that may still be in place in your state or profits we want everyone to celebrate but we don't want to increase the chances of someone getting covet so look into this first before nixing the idea of virtual events it's also getting warmer across the country so an outdoor event with plenty of space between participants may be safe that really depends on your dispensary and what you want to accomplish you want to think about consumption will people be able to enjoy cannabis at an in-person event or do regulations mean that they can't you may have to make this clear with attendees so that you don't end up getting shut down also consider creating a contingency plan for any in-person events in the case that covert numbers change between now and 420. now this year 420 is on a tuesday when was the last time you went out to party on a tuesday of course there's no law that says you can't celebrate 4 20 on 4 20. so think about how many events you want to do and when do you want to run multiple events throughout the week to maximize the fun pre-game with events on the weekend before 4 20 so people can fully enjoy themselves get your timing squared away so you can better decide what you can actually do the last concern i want to mention is admission some of the events i am going to cover could be pricey to put on so you want to consider whether your event will be free or required an admission fee you can also charge a nominal fee that goes to charity as a way to raise funds for a worthwhile cause like your local food pantry okay let's cover some fun 420 campaigns
{Puff & Paint}
if you end up doing any of these events please do let us know because we had a lot of fun putting these together for you so it would be really awesome to receive some feedback there some of these can actually be run either virtually or in person it's again all up to you first up i'm going to talk about some of the activity based events these events are centered around doing something together with your audience if you want to share the virtues of cannabis for creativity how about passing the paint along with the spliff a puff and paint event can help get the creative juices flowing plus you may help your customers break out of their covered rut everyone could use something different to do right now you can partner with a local paint shop to put together doesn't it i'm sure you've seen them around they often offer paint parties with wine as an example so you can see if they will be open to partnering with you or you can find a local artist who may be interested in leading this event with you if you want to do a puff and paint event think about how many people will get their supplies for a free event you can actually publish the material list beforehand for the paid event right you can create a packages for people to actually pick up prior to or during the event
{Yoga & Meditation}
once you focus on cannabis for wellness a yoga or meditation event may be the right path for you in that event online yoga and meditation classes have become commonplace because of the pandemic with so much anxiety in the world right now everyone needs to de-stress now we know that cannabis is a great tool for that but so is yoga and meditation and there are a lot of people who like to combine cannabis with their yoga and meditation practices if you're opting to do this in person see if you can get a permit for a local park or a large open space where people can easily spread out talk to your local yoga studios to get and see if they would be interested in partnering with you or reach out to a online yoga teacher you may uh want to take on one of their classes to make sure that it is a fit for your target audiences beforehand
{High Trivia}
how about a game show style event or pub trivia style event centered around cannabis knowledge that's the gist of high trivia have people sign up in teams or run multiple events throughout the day with contestants like a jeopardy theme to prep for this event you're going to need someone to come up with your trivia questions you can pick certain categories and then go from there for example maybe one of the categories is terpenes your questions can focus on the effects or aromas of a particular terpene and players will guess the terpene or how about famous pot heads or weed flicks you can really take this one on any direction you want you will need at least one personable host to lead your trivia and a few people managing your players checking for raised hands or buzzers and verifying answers you will also want prizes of course gift cards freebies or gear are all great giveaways and will keep your players motivated once you get your customers smoking more
{Strain Tasting}
than just blue dream or pineapple express well help them get started with uh strain tasting create a bundle feature at least three different strains for people to try and have your attendees pick them up beforehand so they can smoke along you will want to talk about the differences of the strains like where they're grown what their characteristics are prevailing terpenes what kind of high you can actually expect and more so get your most skilled blood tender to gather this information for you and or just you know lean on your in-house cannabis nerd this can easily become a monthly or even weekly event for your dispensaries as well or you can even create an on-demand webinar that helps educate people about the strains and lets them do their tasting whenever they want you can also tweak this to make it into a strained pairing partner with a local bakery and treat makers to create a menu of strains and desserts that go well together does the lemon mean in lemon skunk really bring out the citrus in that mini key lime pie share it with your customers get excited
{Get Baked}
speaking of key lime pie 420 is all about getting baked so why not share how to make some edibles at home people have been baking and cooking like crazy for the last year and all my cooking classes have become so popular with this event you can combine two things people already love weed and food and show them how to safely and deliciously combine them into one tantalizing dessert or dish if you want to go this route make a shopping list for your participants so they can bake along with your team you will want to either film for from a nice kitchen or rent out a kitchen think about what you can make in a given amount of time you don't want people sit around while you take a dish take on a dish that takes so many hours to actually get made as part of your event you may need to prep certain parts of the dishes ahead of time like cooking shows do so that you can show what your dish looks like at different points or different stages of the baking process during breaks like when someone is putting something in the oven or waiting for a product to simmer right a second host can share baking or cooking tips like the easy way to infuse a beverage with some tincture or things off with decorative bud
{Tune In & Tune Out}
let's talk about entertainment if you want to allow your audience to zone out then entertainment may be the way to go so can we go together like well music and weed concerts are pretty popular for 420 and we don't have to skip them this year sure they will look very different but that doesn't mean they won't be fun if you can put a put on a in-person concert that's excellent maybe it's a car concert where people stay in their vehicles on a large outdoor concert-like arena where they can easily spread out you can invite food trucks and local artisans to take up take it up a notch for virtual concerts think about providing tips to your attendees for getting the most out of it should they hook up their laptops to external speakers for better sound dim the lights to set the mood or invite a friend from their bubble over so they can actually enjoy the show together think about how you want people to experience the virtual event help them do so
{Get Your Groove On}
virtual djs are actually a really big thing right now if you haven't experienced an in-house dance party yet well get ready but here's the thing it's really only as fun as you want to make it just like any virtual concert you will want to think about how you want people to experience the event are there things you can give away in store before your virtual party to help people celebrate for example if you're doing a house party theme you can give away glow sticks ahead of time at the store if you are able to do an in-person event with a dj make sure to broaden the appeal by including taco truck or other popular food truck in your area advertise any giveaways that you're doing and be clear about the social distancing measures or other safety measures so people know what you expect will space be limited do people need to sign up beforehand tell people to to do so um so they aren't surprised the day of the event if you have the space you can also run a talent show featuring musicians
{Showcase Talent}
spoken word poets and many more ideas again you can do this virtually and either feature people in different locations or have your performance all in one space and move the camera around if you have a if you're having different talents stream themselves make sure you have a tech guru that is coordinating everything behind the scenes and making sure that the right person's video is pinned to the screen at the right time for an in-person event you may want to provide some sort of between act entertainment like giveaways or vendor talks so that you can clean the mic and other equipment before performance are actually coming back to the stage so your talent has the time to set up their act
{Get the Giggles}
showcase your giggliest strings by putting on a comedy show with local comedians you can have an improv show or go for a more basic stand-up show with multiple comedians getting a set amount of time have food or hand out for an in-person event and ask people to bring blankets or chairs so they can spread out and get more comfortable you can also advertise strains that lead to euphoria and joy that will pair well with the comic stylist for your entertainment streaming has really taken off during the pandemic and most of us have
{Watch Together}
binge watched a few series by now so platforms that allow you to stream movies together and chat with friends have become more popular too and you can actually use them to host a movie night you can share a popcorn recipe or a list of your favorite edibles to pair with movies before you even do the screening you can even put together a bundle of products for people to pick up before your showtime if you're in a warm area you could actually use an outdoor movie setting or even a drive up movie idea educational events are great for new
{Get Educated}
cannabis markets where people are curious and want to learn more maybe they aren't so sure whether cannabis is the right tool or product for them or maybe they're just getting started and have a bunch of questions these types of events are also helpful for medical dispensaries since doctors are unable to provide specific guidance for medical cannabis use it's really up to the dispensaries to share their knowledge and educate the patients if you are a recreational dispensary and want to teach your audience something you can also put a spin on the event like the five mistakes weed noobs make and how to avoid them when doing an educational event think of how you can actually make it fun you can structure like a ted talk do interviews with engaging people or run a panel of experts keep your target audience in mind when setting up this type of event so that you don't veer into boring talking head territory you know that can get pretty dreadful the last type of event i'm going to cover today is product or brand based events
{Vendor Showcase}
a lot of the spencer have had to stop doing vendor days in store because of covet why not take the excitement online take a look at your sales numbers and see which brands are the most popular approach those product wraps first and see if there would be willing or interested in doing something special if you have brands that will be launching new products this could be a perfect springboard for them offer a discount for these new items and have a rep even share some of the information surrounding that particular product this can be actually combined with another event too so you know think of ways to make this more fun so maybe you have a dj going with some brand wrap or site like on-site food trucks as well don't feel like you have to limit your event to just one thing you can have a itinerary so people can show up at different parts of the event that you know are more interesting to them that will also allow for the event to be more engaging with your audience
{Level Up Your Event}
okay so those are the most kind of the more you know interesting if you will or or uplifting event ideas but you know in reality let's let's talk about leveling them up and by the way you can steal any of these idea put your own spin on them and make them yours we do not mind as a matter of fact we encourage you to do so so how can you make these events even better one way is by giving away free stuff now your your first instinct may be to give away branded gear or products if that's allowed in your state or province but don't stop there offer special deals to attend these like coupon codes they can enter at checkout so let's say you're talking about a specific brand give a discount for that specific brand you can also bundle products so if you're doing a strain tasting you can offer a buy one get one deal or provide a free grinder with the purchase of bud if you really uh want to delight your guests though take it up a step further giveaways don't have to be associated with your dispensary to be memorable if you're hosting a high trivia night and need prizes consider giving away grubhub or doordash e gift cards that way your players can take care of their munchies after nabbing on that high score food delivery gift cards are great for almost any 420 event and you're essentially helping your participants cater their party it's a gesture that i guarantee you they will remember you can also just randomly give away gift cards throughout any of the events to keep the engagement up have a high person in your chat encouraging conversation and doing random giveaways this will definitely keep people tuned in just don't forget to market that you will be doing these giveaways
{Pump Up the Volume}
now speaking of marketing if you want to get people signing up for these events you have to promote it so while you're getting ready to uh to getting ready to doing all of this stuff behind the scenes you also need to be sharing your event details wide and far you can run targeted display ads to people within your area this is actually something we actually can help you with so don't hesitate to schedule a call with me at foot traffic dot me for a slash call and we'll put it over here on the chat as well the sooner we get this set up the better let's drive traffic to your event page and get people signing up make sure to also have in-store flyers with qr codes that share the details of your event you can place these in customers bags and make it easy for them to rsvp add your event to your website and your email newsletter as well as get as much traction as possible if you're hosting a large event you can do a press release too just make sure to get the word out asap so you can get as many eyeballs on it before the event actually comes you should also share your event on social media just make sure to avoid graphics that actually include anyone smoking marijuana and don't mention selling marijuana both of these are no no's on social media if you want more do's and don'ts of what you can't post on social media check out our past webinars on posting to instagram if you need a refresher and we'll put the link here on the chat window for you as well so what do you need to make your event
{Get Prepped}
happen for a successful online event you will want to make sure you have a reliable live streaming or event service that's capable of broadcasting to your participants obviously here we use zoom it allows us to put on webinars of up to 500 participants if you are seeing us live on youtube linkedin or facebook that's because we're using a tool called restream to broadcast live to additional platforms restream takes our zoom stream and shares it across a wide variety of platforms he also allows us to rebroadcast the recording now you may be thinking why don't i just live stream to youtube instagram or facebook well that is actually a great idea however um unfortunately it is not a very good platform today because it happens to be a great way to get your accounts shut down because those platforms still heavily regulate cannabis content put it on a live event that centers around marijuana on their platforms is pretty much asking them to take your account away so talk about buzzkill on 420 right that's the last thing you want so play it safe and stick with a third-party platform that requires people to register for the event for both in-person and virtual events you will want to consider ticketing so that you have manageable crowds you can use an online platform to do this even if you your event is actually free this is especially helpful if you're doing any in-person events or have a limited amount of space if you can only safely have 10 people in your dispensary at any given time you can even offer time slots and make it clear that you need to have these limits to ensure everyone safety once you have an inkling of the type of event you want to do you also want to consider who will be running your event who is going to handle the tech stuff who will be on the camera etc if you are doing an interview who will be writing the questions and doing the research if you're hosting a talent show who will be in seeing it and who is working in the back end to keep stuff running smoothly plot out everything that needs to occur for a successful event and start assigning responsibilities as soon as possible of course you also need to have your deals in place you don't want to start advertising them too early but you should know what your what you have on sale and when your deals will be starting make sure your deals align with your event and consider whether you will be offering special events and special deals excuse me for your loyalty members or your event attendees i want to thank everybody once again for joining us today i hope you have some good ideas now churning in your head for your 420 event and for sticking around with us you've qualified for a free yeti tumbler foot traffic special and get in touch with us i did put over here to foot traffic dot me for slash call link um schedule a call let's get your shipping information so we can get this shipped out to you i want to thank you once again for your time have a wonderful rest of your day ]
